Pumpkin Pet Insurance Review 2025

Written by Kevin Hughes

Last updated: 24 January 2025

Pumpkin certainly sounds cute, but what does this pet insurance provider offer?

Compared to many other leading pet insurers, Pumpkin is a relative newbie – launched in 2020 by Zoetis, the global animal health company. Pumpkin promises ‘super extensive’ accident and illness cover for dogs and cats, with high reimbursement rates of either 80% or 90%.

Unlike some other pet insurance providers, Pumpkin doesn’t provide the option of an accident-only policy. As well as dog insurance and cat insurance, Pumpkin also offers specialist puppy and kitten insurance plans and preventive care packages via its optional wellness cover.

Pros & Cons of Pumpkin pet insurance

  • No upper age limits – coverage doesn’t decline as your pet gets older
  • 10% multi-pet discount for every additional pet you insure
  • No lengthy waiting periods for orthopedic conditions
  • No accident-only plan available as an option
  • 24/7 pet health helpline is only available if you have a wellness plan

How does Pumpkin Pet Insurance work?

Pumpkin Pet Insurance covers your dog or cat for eligible accidents and illnesses, including chronic conditions. If your pet is unwell or injured and needs veterinary care, your pet insurance policy will reimburse you for the cost of some of that treatment, less the deductible on your plan and depending on the reimbursement level; Pumpkin Pet Insurance has high reimbursement options of either 80% or 90%.

The price of your pet insurance premium is calculated using a range of different factors – primarily the age and breed of your pet, and your location. The price of a Pumpkin Pet Insurance policy may increase as your pet gets older but the level of cover won’t; some pet insurers offer accident-only cover for senior pets.

The benefits of Pumpkin Pet Insurance

Pumpkin provides high reimbursement rates – with up to 90% available for all pets – and a high level of standard coverage. That cover includes some care and treatment that other insurers might charge extra for, such as dental illnesses, vet exam fees, alternative therapies and behavioral issues.

Pet parents of senior dogs and cats will be pleased to learn that there’s no age restrictions on taking out a pet insurance policy with Pumpkin, either. While some insurers have an upper age limit for sign-ups, or scale back the level of coverage for older pets – offering accident-only plans instead – Pumpkin welcomes dogs and cats of all ages.

Other benefits include multi-pet discounts for every pet you insure, and a 14-day period for all covered conditions. Some insurers impose a six-month waiting period on certain orthopedic conditions, but Pumpkin does not.

Pumpkin Pet Insurance plans explained

Plans are kept simple with Pumpkin. With no option of an accident-only plan – which doesn’t provide cover for anything considered an illness – Pumpkin instead provides a single insurance plan. This can then be tailored to your budget by choosing from annual coverage limits of $5k, $10k, $20k and Unlimited, and setting your deductible (the amount you pay when you make a claim).

Deductibles are set at $100, $250, $500 and $1,000. You also choose between an 80% or a 90% reimbursement rate. What you choose will have an effect on your insurance premium, so you can scale cover up or down depending on what you are prepared to pay.

What does Pumpkin pet insurance cover?

Pumpkin provides pretty extensive coverage. Covered conditions include digestive illnesses, hip dysplasia, different types of cancer, emergency treatment, hospitalization costs, skin, eye and ear infections, surgery, specialist care, knee and ligament injuries and more.

Hereditary conditions are also covered, which is good news if you have a breed of dog or cat that’s genetically pre-disposed to particular health issues.

Pumpkin Pet Insurance also covers microchipping implantation, treatment for behavioural issues, alternative therapies and prescription pet food if needed to help treat a condition.

Is Pumpkin pet insurance good value for money?

Pumpkin offers a comprehensive accident and illness plan, with a range of annual cover limits and deductibles. There’s no accident-only plan.

A pet insurance plan from Pumpkin can be enhanced further by adding the optional wellness package. Titled Preventive Essentials, this incurs an additional cost but can refund fully the cost of your pet’s annual wellness exam, yearly vaccinations, and parasite screening tests. Members also get access to a 24/7 pet health helpline, through PawSupport.

How good is Pumpkin’s customer service?

Unlike some other pet insurance providers, Pumpkin doesn’t provide a 24/7 phone helpline as part of its standard plan – you need to take out extra wellness cover for that. So, pet parents perhaps won’t benefit from support and customer service whenever they need it.

However, Pumpkin does score well according to customer reviews on the independent website Trustpilot. At the time of writing, 86% of almost 1,500 reviewers gave Pumpkin a 5-star rating, with an average overall score of 4.7 out of 5, with some noting the helpful and responsive customer service.

How do I contact Pumpkin?

If you need to contact Pumpkin Pet Insurance, the Care team is available from 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday, and from 9am to 5pm on Saturdays. Call 1 (866) 273 6369.

Pumpkin are also contactable by email on help@pumpkin.care, and you can also use the live chat function on the website from 9am to 5pm Monday through to Saturday.

What is Pumpkin’s claims process?

Pumpkin’s claims process is straightforward. Pay the vet directly, and then submit your claim online, via your Pumpkin account.

Be sure to get a copy of your invoice, and any other relevant details, from your vet. Log into your account, head to ‘Claims’ and then upload an image of the bill and any medical records. There are no forms to fill in this way.

Alternatively, you can download a claims form, complete it, and email it to claims@pumpkin.care. Track the status of your claim via your online account. When processed, you’ll receive a notification to let you know, and you’ll be reimbursed by direct deposit or check.

How much will Pumpkin pay for my claim?

How much Pumpkin pays for your claim depends on the reimbursement on your policy –80% or 90% – and your deductible. Here are some examples of claim payments:

Average Vet Bill Cash back w/ 80% Cash back w/ 90% Difference w/ 80%
Cancer $8,137 $6,509.60 $7,323.30 $1,627.40
Hip Dysplasia $3,490 $2,792.00 $3,141.00 $698.00
Swalled Object $3,262 $2,609.60 $2,935.80 $326.60
Heart Murmur $1,140 $912.00 $1,026.00 $114.00

Are there any coverage exclusions?

Pumpkin provides extensive coverage for a range of conditions, but like all pet insurers there are exclusions.

Pre-existing conditions – conditions your pet was diagnosed with or showing symptoms of before taking out an insurance plan – won’t be covered, though Pumpkin may provide cover for certain ‘curable’ pre-existing conditions after 180 days of being symptom free. Knee and ligament conditions are always excluded if pre-existing, however.

Pumpkin won’t pay for costs associated with cosmetic procedures, dental cleanings (if not due to illness), breeding, pregnancy and injuries or illness caused by the owner or anyone living in the same household as the pet.

Full details of all coverage exclusions will be available in the terms and conditions of your Pumpkin plan.

What are the waiting periods for conditions?

Pumpkin operates a 14-day waiting period for all conditions, including accidents and illnesses.

This is in line with many other pet insurers. Though some have waiting periods of a few days for accidents, some have extended waiting periods of six months for orthopedic conditions, such as ligament problems. Pumpkin just has a flat 14-day waiting period.

How quickly does Pumpkin Pet Insurance pay claims?

Pumpkin doesn’t state a set time to pay claims, just that once a claim has been processed it should be paid ‘quickly’. If you choose to be reimbursed by direct deposit to your bank, you’ll receive payment faster than a mailed check.

Can I customize my Pumpkin Pet Insurance?

Yes. While Pumpkin provides a simple accident and illness plan, with a choice of four annual cover limits – $5k, $10k, $20k and Unlimited – you can customize your plan to suit your needs. There are also four annual deductible options, of $100, $250, $500, or $1k.

You can also choose to add Pumpkin’s wellness plan too, providing extra coverage for routine vet appointments, though this comes at an additional cost.

State availability for Pumpkin Pet Insurance

Pumpkin Pet Insurance is available across all 50 US states, though the cost of cover will vary depending on where you and your pet live.

Verdict: Is Pumpkin Pet Insurance good?

With lots of positive reviews, it seems that Pumpkin Pet Insurance is a great option for pet parents. We like the simple insurance plan – though some might be disappointed there isn’t the choice of an accident-only alternative – which provides comprehensive coverage.

Pumpkin is a particularly good choice for parents of senior pets, because you can still get illness coverage for dogs and cats aged 15 years and older. Some other pet insurers restrict the level of cover available for senior pets.
