The ASPCA – American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals – is well known for its work in animal rescue and protection. It also provides pet insurance as ASPCA Pet Health Insurance, and has been covering dogs and cats (and horses, actually) since 2006.
ASPCA Pet Health Insurance offers two main insurance plans. There’s an accident-only plan as well as a comprehensive accident and illness plan titled Complete Coverage. Both can be customized with a good choice of annual cover limits, and reimbursement rates up to 90%. Pet parents can supplement either of these with one of two preventive/wellness plans, at additional cost.
With no age limit on cover, a multi-pet discount, 24/7 pet telehealth support and a 30-day moneyback guarantee, it’s easy to see why ASPCA Pet Health Insurance has become one of the leading names in US dog and cat insurance.

Pros & Cons of ASPCA Pet Health Insurance pet insurance

- No upper age limit for cover
- Vet exam fees covered
- No option to pay the vet directly
- Longer waiting period for accidents than some other insurers
How does ASPCA Pet Health Insurance work?
ASPCA Pet Health Insurance works in very much the same way as you’d expect from a pet insurance provider. Obtain a quote by choosing your level of annual coverage, reimbursement rate and deductible, and select your type of cover – accident and illness or accident-only. The price of your policy will be based on a few different factors, including the age and breed of your pet but also your home location; some US states will be more expensive for cover than others.
When you’ve bought your pet insurance policy, there will be a waiting period in place. After this, you will be able to submit claims to recoup the costs of veterinary care and treatment.
The benefits of ASPCA Pet Health insurance
There are some useful benefits with an ASPCA Pet Health Insurance plan. Unlike some other pet insurance providers, there’s no maximum age for sign up or upper age limit restrictions on cover so even senior dogs or cats can benefit from comprehensive coverage.
If you have more than one pet that needs to be insured, there’s a 10% multi-pet discount for each additional pet you cover. All policyholders also get access to a 24/7 telehealth service, managed by The Vet Connection.
Most importantly, ASPCA Pet Health Insurance is comprehensive – covering many conditions and issues, including some that aren’t always part of other pet insurance plans.
ASPCA Pet Health Insurance plans explained
ASPCA Pet Health Insurance offers an Accident Only plan that covers emergencies and injuries – broken bones, wounds, swallowed toxins or foreign objects, tooth fractures – but its most comprehensive plan is called Complete Coverage.
It sounds comprehensive, and it is, providing cover for accidents, injuries, illness and chronic conditions. Both types of insurance plan come with four annual coverage levels – $2.5k, $5k, $7k and $10k – reimbursement rates of 70%, 80% or 90% and deductibles of $100, $250 or $500.
ASPCA Pet Health Insurance also provides Preventive Care as an optional wellness plan, which can be added at extra cost. It’s available in two levels – Basic and Prime.
What does ASPCA Pet Health Insurance cover?
ASPCA Pet Health Insurance provides extensive cover, though this always depends on the type of plan you have, so do check your policy terms and conditions to see exactly what your pet is covered for. Accident Only provides limited cover compared to Complete Coverage.
ASPCA Pet Health Insurance can cover treatment for accidents, including burns, breaks and fractures, and poisoning. There’s also cover for canine and feline cancer, chronic illnesses such as arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, allergies, digestive issues and more. Breed-specific conditions are covered, too.
Additionally, the insurer provides cover for dental care, diagnostic tests and alternative therapies – including acupuncture, hydrotherapy and chiropractic therapy.

Then simply submit the claim. If any further details are needed to help process your claim, you’ll be contacted.
If you don’t have the app or prefer not to use it, you can download a claim form from the Member Center section on the website.
How much will ASPCA Pet Health Insurance pay for my claim?
As with any pet insurance provider, the amount you will receive towards reimbursement of a claim depends on the details of your policy – the reimbursement rate, annual coverage level and deductible. The deductible is your contribution in the event of a claim and this is paid annually. If your deductible is $250 and your claim is for $3,000, you’ll pay that first (if you claim again later in the same year, you won’t need to pay your deductible again.
That leaves $2,750 you can be reimbursed for. What you receive next depends on your reimbursement rate. ASPCA Pet Health Insurance has reimbursement rates of 70%, 80% and 90%. With a 70% reimbursement rate, you’ll receive $1,924.99 towards the remaining bill. With 80% it’s $2,200 and with 90% you’ll be paid back $2,475.
Average Vet Bill | Cash back w/ 70% | Cash back w/ 80% | Cash back w/ 90% | Difference w/ 70% |

Tumour Surgery $1,570 | $1,099.00 | $1,256.00 | $1,413.00 | $314.00 |
Are there any coverage exclusions?
Yes, there are coverage exclusions with ASPCA Pet Health Insurance. All pet insurance providers have some exclusions.
ASPCA Pet Health Insurance won’t provide cover for pre-existing conditions, though it does seem some pre-existing conditions ‘curable’ if your pet has been free of symptoms for 180 days or more. Knee and ligament conditions are excluded from the curable list, though – check your policy coverage to establish health issues that are listed as curable.
Other coverage exclusions include costs related to breeding and pregnancy, boarding, grooming and cosmetic or elective procedures. Cover won’t be provided if your pet needs treatment for illness or injury caused by neglect or harm by a pet parent or member of the household.
What are the waiting periods for conditions?
While some pet insurers have different waiting periods for accidents, illnesses and orthopedic conditions – such as knee ligament injuries – ASPCA Pet Health Insurance doesn’t distinguish. Instead, there’s just a flat 14-day waiting period for everything.
How quickly does ASPCA Pet Health Insurance pay claims?
ASPCA Pet Health Insurance says claims can take up to 30 days to pay, though in many cases reimbursement can take just a few days.
Can I customize my ASPCA Pet Health Insurance?
ASPCA Pet Health Insurance can be customized to suit your needs and budget. For example, with a Complete Coverage plan you can choose your amount of annual coverage from four different options, right up to $10k a year.
You also have the option to add a preventive care or wellness plan, which covers the costs of routine medical appointments such as vaccinations, annual checks, flea and worming treatment, and so on. A Basic and Prime package is available.
State availability for ASPCA Pet Health Insurance
ASPCA Pet Health Insurance is available in all US states. You can use any licensed vet in the US and Canada for treatment and care.
Verdict: Is ASPCA Pet Health Insurance good?
Independent reviews of ASPCA Pet Health Insurance seem mainly positive; this is a popular and trusted pet insurance provider, no doubt in part because of its association with ASPCA.
The Complete Coverage plan is thorough and comprehensive, providing extensive cover for a large range of injuries and illnesses including some health issues and treatments that aren’t always offered by insurers unless you pay extra. We’re referring to alternative therapies and behavioral issues, here. We also like the flexibility of two different preventive care/wellness plans.
A 14-day waiting period for accidents is longer than some insurers – it’s not unusual for that to be as low as two or three days – but on the flip side, the 14 days applies to everything, even orthopedic conditions. Many insurers impose a six-month waiting period for those.
