Healthy Paws Pet Insurance Review 2025

Some pet insurance providers allow parents to customize their policy, perhaps by choosing the reimbursement terms or adding on supplementary coverage. This isn’t the case with Healthy Paws — aside from the deductible, there’s no scope for personalization.

For many parents, however, this might not necessarily be an issue. The fixed annual limits and reimbursement percentages are very generous and the coverage is wide-ranging enough, too. The provider has a good reputation when it comes to speedy reimbursements as well, but there are also instances when Healthy Paws will directly pay veterinary bills, too.

Pros & Cons of Healthy Paws pet insurance

  • Unlimited annual limit as standard
  • No per-incident caps
  • Can pay vets directly for expensive medical bills
  • Alternative treatments included in base coverage
  • No accident-only plan or supplementary wellness coverage is available
  • Reimbursement percentage and annual limit cannot be customized
  • Waiting periods can be up to 12 months for Hip Dysplasia and pets aged six or older at the time of enrolment aren’t covered for this condition

How does Healthy Paws Pet Insurance work?

Parents can enroll cats or dogs aged between 8 weeks and 14 years old onto a Healthy Paws insurance policy. Pets have coverage for life once they’re insured and parents continue to pay the premium.

When parents pay for veterinary treatment included within Healthy Paws’ coverage, they can make a claim. Once approved, these costs will be paid back to parents, minus the deductible and the parent’s share of the reimbursement percentage.

The benefits of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance

The main advantage of Healthy Paws is the unlimited annual limit offered as standard, which means Healthy Paws doesn’t cap the amount it will reimburse over a year. This is particularly beneficial if a pet suffers from a costly health condition, such as cancer.

In addition, Healthy Paws will often directly pay expensive veterinary costs, rather than requiring parents to foot the bill initially and wait for reimbursements. This saves the inconvenience of finding large amounts of money at short notice.

When parents do have to put in a claim themselves, these are mostly processed and reimbursed in the space of two days, which is a lot quicker than many rival providers.

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance plans explained

Healthy Paws only offers an accident-and-illness plan — this will reimburse parents for veterinary costs involved with treating injuries and illnesses, including chronic and hereditary conditions.

There’s no accident-only plan or supplementary coverage available.

What does Healthy Paws Pet Insurance cover?

Healthy Paws will reimburse parents for the veterinary expenses that arise from treating a pet’s injuries and illnesses, from the initial diagnostics and hospitalization to surgery and prescription medications. Alternative treatments — such as acupuncture, hydrotherapy and chiropathy — are also included in the coverage.

How good is Healthy Paws Pet Insurance’s customer service?

Healthy Paws scores high on Trustpilot, with many reviews mentioning the exemplary customer service experienced. It has also been the top-rated provider for seven years in a row on petinsurancequotes.com, based on verified customer reviews.

However, there’s no 24/7 vet telehealth service available for Healthy Paws’ customers.

How do I contact Healthy Paws Pet Insurance?

Parents can speak to a Healthy Paws representative over the phone at (855) 898-8991 or by email at info@healthypawspetinsurance.com.

What is Healthy Paws Pet Insurance’s claims process?

If parents wish to make a claim, they need to submit a copy of a paid invoice to Healthy Paws. This can be done on the provider’s app or the online customer centre. However, there’s also the option to submit an invoice and supporting medical documents to Healthy Paws by email, fax or mail.

In some instances, Healthy Paws can pay a vet directly to cover the cost of treatment. This needs to be arranged over the phone before the procedure takes place. Healthy Paws can pay any licensed vet in the USA, provided the vet in question is willing to accept direct payment.

How much will Healthy Paws Pet Insurance pay for my claim?

Healthy Paws has a set reimbursement percentage of 90%, which means that it will only ever reimburse 90% of an eligible claim. Parents are responsible for covering the remaining 10%.

The deductible also needs to be taken into account. This is a specified amount that parents have to pay once a year before an insurance provider begins reimbursing. Parents can choose a deductible between $100 and $1,000.

Healthy Paws only offers an unlimited annual limit, which means there’s no cap on the total amount of reimbursements it will provide over a year.

Average Vet Bill Cash back w/ 70% Cash back w/ 80% Cash back w/ 90% Difference w/ 70%
Cancer $8,137 $5,695.90 $6,509.60 $7,323.30 $1,627.40
Canine parvovirus $5,578 $3,904.60 $4,462.40 $5,020.20 $1,115.60
Swallowed Object $3,262 $2,283.40 $2,609.60 $2,935.80 $652.40
Tumour Surgery $1,570 $1,099.00 $1,256.00 $1,413.00 $314.00

Are there any coverage exclusions?

As with all pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws will not reimburse costs linked to pre-existing conditions — these are medical complaints or symptoms diagnosed by a vet before the start of a pet insurance policy or during a waiting period.

Healthy Paws doesn’t distinguish between curable and incurable pre-existing conditions, so even future recurrences of injuries and illnesses that have been successfully treated will still be considered a pre-existing condition and ineligible for reimbursement.

Healthy Paws’ coverage has a bilateral exclusion when it comes to cruciate ligament injuries. Suppose a pet has been diagnosed with a cruciate ligament injury on one side of their body before enrolment or during the waiting period. In that case, the cruciate ligament on the other side will be excluded from coverage.

In addition, Healthy Paws will not provide reimbursements for vet exam fees, routine treatments, or preventive care. Dental health isn’t covered, except if teeth are injured in an accident and require extraction or reconstruction.

The coverage also excludes costs arising from elective procedures, behavioral modification, training, boarding, diets, and non FDA-approved treatment or supplements.

What are the waiting periods for conditions?

The waiting periods vary slightly from state to state, but the most common is 15 days for both accidents and illnesses, and 12 months for Hip Dysplasia.

How quickly does Healthy Paws Pet Insurance pay claims?

Most eligible Healthy Paws claims are processed within 2 days and reimbursement is issued within a further 24 business hours. Parents should be aware that reimbursements via direct deposit might take up to 10 days in some cases and checks in the mail can take as long as 15 days to arrive.

Can I customize my Healthy Paws Pet Insurance?

Parents can only customize the deductible — this must be an amount between $100 and $1,000. Those looking to lower their premium should pick as high a deductible as possible and the opposite is true for those looking to pay less in the event of a claim.

Healthy Paws doesn’t offer parents the opportunity to change the reimbursement percentage (which is fixed at 90%), nor alter the unlimited annual limit. There’s also no add-on coverage available for parents to customize their plan.

State availability for Healthy Paws Pet Insurance

Healthy Paws is available in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Parents can receive reimbursements for eligible treatment performed by any licensed vet in the USA and Canada.

Verdict: Is Healthy Paws Pet Insurance good?

There’s lots to like about Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. Parents of pets who are unlucky enough to suffer from costly medical problems — such as cancer or heart disease — will not have to worry about the size of their medical bills, as there’s no annual limit on reimbursements or per-incident caps.

Healthy Paws can also pay vets directly for costly treatment, which is a lot more convenient for parents. If policyholders have to make the claims themselves, however, these tend to be speedy, often taking less than two days for customers to receive in their bank account.

It should be pointed out that there are a few aspects that parents might find off putting. The main one is the lack of customization available. Both the annual limit and reimbursement percentage are fixed and there’s no supplementary coverage available.

There’s also an especially long waiting period of 12 months for Hip Dysplasia, which could prove costly if a pet is unfortunate enough to be diagnosed with this before the waiting period is up. Be mindful that dental illness and vet exam fees aren’t included in coverage, either.
