Founded in 2019, Spot might be one of the newer pet insurance providers in the US but has already earned lots of positive reviews from customers. It offers both accident and illness, and accident-only plans – some insurers don’t have the latter – with a good selection of annual coverage options, including Unlimited, so there’s no cap on how much you can claim for.
Dogs and cats of any age can be covered by Spot’s accident and illness plans. This isn’t always the case with other insurers, who put an upper age limit and restrict senior pets aged 14 and over to accident-only coverage.
With a dedicated app to assist with quick claims, and a 24/7 pet telehealth helpline, Spot is accessible and support is always on hand.

Pros & Cons of Spot pet insurance
- 10% multi-pet discount for each additional pet insured

- 24/7 pet telehealth support with VetAccess
- Offers seven different annual cover levels, including Unlimited
- 14-day waiting period for accidents – longer than some pet insurers
How does Spot Pet Insurance work?
Spot Pet Insurance offers a choice of plans – accident and illness, or accident-only – covering a range of conditions. Pet parents can then customize their plan by selecting from a list of reimbursement options, annual cover limit amounts, and deductibles. These details have an impact on your policy’s premium; choose $10,000 annual cover instead of $2,500 and the price is likely to be higher. A higher deductible – the amount you pay in the event of a claim – typically contributes to a higher overall price in comparison to a lower deductible.
Like all pet insurers, Spot also takes other factors into consideration when calculating pet insurance prices – primarily the age and breed of your dog or cat, and your location.
The benefits of Spot Pet Insurance
Aside from the comprehensive coverage their pet insurance plans provide, pet parents are likely to love some of the additional benefits that come with buying a policy. One standout is VetAccess 24/7, a helpline that provides immediate access to support and advice from veterinary experts – this is included with an insurance plan at no extra cost.
If you have more than one pet that you choose to get insured, you can benefit from Spot’s 10% multi-pet discount, which applies with each and every additional dog or cat you get covered.
Policyholders also get access to ‘Spot Perks’, which provide discounted offers and deals on selected toys, food and pet accessories.
Spot Pet Insurance plans explained
Spot provides two different types of basic pet insurance plan – accident and illness, and accident-only.
Accident and illness is more comprehensive, providing cover for a wide range of conditions, whereas accident-only is exactly that. It provides cover for injuries but not for a lot of other health issues that commonly affect dogs and cats.
Either of those plans can be set with a combination of annual cover limits, with seven different levels available – $2,500, $3,000, $4,000, $5,000, $7,000, $10,000 and Unlimited. Policyholders also choose from five deductibles – $100, $250, $500, $750 and $1,000 – and reimbursement rates of 70%, 80% or 90%.
Spot offers a wellness-style Preventive Care plan, too, for routine appointments such as vaccinations. This is available in two levels – Gold and Platinum.
What does Spot pet insurance cover?
Spot Pet Insurance covers a wide range of health issues, though coverage of your pet will depend on what type of policy you have.
Accident and illness cover is the most comprehensive plan. It includes cover for cancer treatment, orthopedic conditions (such as ligament issues, hip dysplasia), digestive illnesses, dental illnesses, skin, eye, ear infections and more.
An accident-only plan, while not as comprehensive (your pet won’t be covered for any care relating to illnesses) still provides cover for surgery, hospitalization fees, vet exam fees, medical supplies, tooth extractions, MRI, CT scans and X-rays and alternative therapies, such as acupuncture (if the therapy is required to help treat recovery of an injury).
Pet parents can add extra cover – at an extra cost – for vaccinations, wellness checks, preventive medications and dental care by signing up to one of Spot’s Preventative Care plans.

Is Spot pet insurance good value for money?
Pet insurance prices will vary across insurers – a series of factors are used to calculate the cost of insurance premiums. Here’s a snapshot of example prices of Spot pet insurance prices compared to some other insurers:
4-month-old Mixed Breed Medium | 2-year-old Golden Retriever | 6-year-old Domestic Shorthair Cat | |
---|---|---|---|
Los Angeles | New York | Florida | |
Spot | $59.43/month | $77.98/month | $54.54/month |
Figo | $60.53/month | $91.52/month | $36.57/month |
Pumpkin | $49.48/month | $92.46/month | $44.61/month |
Fetch | $45.11/month | $83.78/month | $46.72/month |
Lemonade | $59.01/month | $74.82/month | $31.47/month |
How good is Spot’s customer service?
With a 24/7 pet telehealth service included with every insurance plan, help and support is available to policyholders whenever needed – which must be reassuring for pet parents.
Overall, customers seem very happy with the service provided by Spot Pet Insurance judging by a rating of 4.7 out of 5 on Trustpilot from over 7,000 reviews.
How do I contact Spot?
You can contact Spot Pet Insurance by phone on 1-800-905-1595, with the team available from Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm, and Saturday 9am to 5pm. There is, of course, also the 24/7 helpline if you need expert advice.
What is Spot’s claims process?
Policyholders can submit a claim for any covered condition within 270 days of any treatment or care. Pay your vet’s bill, and then submit a claim to get reimbursed. The fastest way to do that is through Spot’s app; simply upload an image of your invoice and complete any required details. You can keep track of your claim’s progress in the app, or by logging into your online customer portal.
If you prefer, you can download a claims form from the Spot website and mail or even fax that in.
How much will Spot pay for my claim?
How much of any claim Spot Pet Insurance reimburses you depends on the details of your policy. If a claim is approved, you’ll typically receive the cost of the bill back, minus your stated deductible and the difference of your set reimbursement. For example, if your reimbursement rate is 80%, you’ll pay 20% of what’s left following the deductible.
Average Vet Bill | Cash back w/ 70% | Cash back w/ 80% | Cash back w/ 90% | Difference w/ 70% |
---|---|---|---|---|
Cancer $8,137 | $5,695.90 | $6,509.60 | $7,323.30 | $1,627.40 |
Diabetes $2,892 | $2,024.40 | $2,313.60 | $2,602.80 | $678.40 |
Tumor Surgery $1,570 | $1,099.00 | $1,256.00 | $1,413.00 | $314.00 |
Inflammatory Glands $1,035 | $724.50 | $828.00 | $931.50 | $207.00 |
Are there any coverage exclusions?
Yes – all pet insurers have coverage exclusions. Like many other insurers, Spot won’t cover pre-existing conditions, though they do make a distinction between incurable and curable conditions. Curable conditions are minor injuries or infections, and if your pet hasn’t shown any symptoms for at least 180 days or six months, Spot will cover them. Note that knee and ligament conditions are exceptions.
Spot won’t pay for any costs associated with cosmetic procedures, boarding, breeding, pregnancy, grooming, funeral services and other items that can be listed in your policy terms and conditions.
What are the waiting periods for conditions?
While some pet insurers have different waiting periods for accidents, illnesses and even orthopedic conditions, Spot doesn’t. Instead, Spot Pet Insurance has a 14-day waiting period for all conditions.
How quickly does Spot Pet Insurance pay claims?
Providing all details have been supplied and Spot doesn’t need to contact you for any extra information, once processed, Spot says your claim should be paid within a few days. You will be paid faster by direct deposit than check.
Can I customize my Spot Pet Insurance?
Yes, you can! Spot offers two types of insurance cover – accident and illness, and accident-only – but whichever you choose, you can tailor these to your budget by setting a preferred reimbursement rate, annual cover limit and annual deductible. Opt for an annual cover of $2,500 or scale up to $10,000 if you prefer. Your choice.
You can also choose to add one or two Preventive Care packages, at extra cost but for increased coverage.
State availability for Spot Pet Insurance
Spot Pet Insurance is available in all 50 US states, including Washington D.C.
Spot is also available in Canada.
Verdict: Is Spot Pet Insurance good?
Spot is a good option for pet parents looking for flexibility and variation in a pet insurance plan – there aren’t many insurers offering seven different annual coverage options and a choice of five deductibles.
Other key benefits include the 24/7 VetAccess support helpline, the multi-pet discount available and – not least – the fact that there are no restrictions on coverage when it comes to age. Unlike some insurers, there’s no upper age limit for pets to be enrolled, which is a big plus.
